wrack – Lawrence Upton

The offering from quarter after press is wrack by Lawrence Upton.

wrack contains three sets: I wrack, Intimacies and pages from a book of the dead.

The writing is solo and polyvocal. There are multivoice texts; and a range of visual texts.

Chris Goode writes: “I can’t leave Wrack alone, I keep returning, making sure I’ve taken it all in, and of course I haven’t, and it’s becoming overwhelming. I deeply admire this work for how sustained it is, and how various are its movements; I envy it and recoil from it because it turns out to be, frankly, shocking in its courageous insistence on putting the body where the mouth is. Upton sets the reader to serious dancing – across disputed borders, between the lines of an exhausted official discourse whose stickman spokesmen have no body to dance with. Wrack shocks more because its shocks come slowly, surfacing patiently through strata of the matter being dealt with. Voices multiply, words divide; stillness and mobility keep clinching each other in the same act. It’s love made real in the compound eye of attention, in the weal of heed not quite yet speechless. All of the Lawrence Uptons yet known to us and one or two still arriving converge in these texts, in this shifting body of work, the wrack not left behind.”

Vinca Andre lives in Montreal, Canada for the moment. Since she was a child she has been utterly confused by her surroundings and as she grew up that translated into abstract/experimental images and words that results in visual poetry. For her it is the best way to bring out in physical form what goes in her mind. It makes perfect sense. This work is her pen and ink drawings digitally worked on.She is thankful for all the wonderful journals/magazines/people who have published her work.

Red Power – Joel Chace

With a nod toward Tristan Tzara’s instructions for making a Dadaist poem (“take some scissors….”), Joel Chace’s new book also takes its place among a number of works that have put gravity in the service of chance. Like Hans Arp’s compositions of abstract geometric cut-outs or Jackson Pollock’s signature drips or Joan Retallack’s paperclipped apertures in Afterrimages, the poems here illuminate the extraordinary accident by which the aleatory and precipitous are linked in both Latin and German. The chance [Zufall] disposition of the words across the page in these poems is a singular event [Fall] arising from the coincidences [from the Latin cadere: "to fall"] of falling [fallend] along clinaminatic paths. The poet’s gestures, however often repeated, cannot account in advance for variables in atmospheric conditions and the discrepant surface-areas of cut paper. The results, happily, are frequently prophetic, describing their own circumstances with a poetic obliquity. None of which should be surprising for a poet whose name, as it happens, is just a letter drop away from chance.

Craig Dworkin

When I look at Joel Chace’s work, I see a series that speaks in tongues that spins out into eternity that hangs from Van Gogh’s asylum like a starry night.

The elements of this series are deceptively simple: cut up words, punctuation, tape, and the background of the page.  The beauty of this arrangement is how it all interacts; each word has multiple references, creating a nearly infinite number of combinations.  Periods float, looking for sentences to close. The page speaks its essence, a grey haze that resembles dark matter that silently affects the overall mechanism. This quantum field, this gravitational attraction, aids in poem formation, pulling and tugging every word.

And then there’s the tape; this is an aspect of cut up, of visual poetry, of illustrations that each creator attempts to cover up.  Joel takes a bold leap here and intentionally incorporates his tape, creating an extra level of fog, words falling, sinking softly into a majestic black hole.

If you enjoy checking out a visual poetry series, this is the one.  Joel brings us all closer to the ultimate source of creativity.  Any good visual poet should enlighten any good visual poet; Joel is and does both, and who could ask for more?

Visual Art:

Dr. Ernest Willaimson III:  I am not a multifarious artist by choice. I create because I have to create. With reference to my visual artwork, my approach is a process of spontaneity and deep concentration imbued with a sort of loud silence that calms me. The works of Picasso and Dali humble me and they inspire me on a continual basis. Dali takes what he holds in imagination and puts it on canvas. I admire his ability to do just that. Picasso, forces the viewer to accept and deny conventional perception. I began painting and composing piano music at the age of 19. My visual artwork is a reflection of what is contained in my unconscious mind. Art is not merely emotive; it is a continuous lifeline which nurtures and edifies the soul of the biosphere. My work  illustrates the various embodiments of life and the various vessels yearning for the circulation of love as a required mechanism of sustenance and breath.

Erin Dobosiewicz: This series, entitled Break Free, tries to breaks boundaries for my subject.  As a model, bodybuilder and fitness expert she is used to being behind the camera.  What happens, though, when focus is shifted and the camera becomes a tool to capture what is inside and not necessarily on the face.  Capturing movement and feeling, the subject becomes more than a prop and starts to tell a story of what is happening inside.  It is no longer about the body image, but about her feelings on of the image of her body.

David Seaman: is a multi-media artist and Lettrist. I have published articles, and a book, Concrete Poetry in France (Ann Arbor: UMI, 1981). Through my long association with Lettrism, I have done a lot of translation and articles on visual poetry. My own work has been exhibited with the Lettrists in Europe, and with the Inisti in Italy.

Recent works include two artist books based on readings of the agriculture of the state of Georgia (USA) in hypergraphic style; they were published by the Lettrist imprint, PSI editions, Paris.

It is my belief that poetry and visual arts exist on a continuum where different media are called upon at different moments to participate in the work. Works in this intermedia setting may call upon painting, words, and sounds to complete their presentation.

Jim Fuess: works with liquid acrylic paint on canvas.  Most of his paintings are abstract, but there are recognizable forms and faces in a number of the abstract paintings.  He is striving for grace and fluidity, movement and balance.  He likes color and believes that beauty can be an artistic goal. There is whimsy, fear, energy, movement, fun and dread in his abstract paintings.  A lot of his abstract paintings are anthropomorphic. The shapes seem familiar. The faces are real. The gestures and movements are recognizable. More of his abstract paintings, both in color and black and white, may be seen at www.jimfuessart.com

Ryan Reynolds:

Digital War Series – Digital war is the title of a recent group of paintings based on media images of human conflict. The images depict shocking violence of lives being torn apart, seen through the filter of the computer or television screen. The painting is fragmented to suggest the scattered digital image and the mediated version of reality. Subjects are removed and abstracted from the actual experience, losing their sense of reality but gaining a new virtual identity.

Digital War

Digital War, Blue Tarp

Time Series – This work explores the intersection between past and present, by integrating historical photographs into a daily record of a site specific location. A painting evolves over time through a series of layers that both merge with and cover up previous observations. By departing from the static image of the traditional landscape, I explore the boundaries between light, space, solid form, and memory- conveying the passage of time and a sense of place. The painting acts as a reflection on the nature of our shared existence, individual perceptions and collective impressions.

Cindy Bee has been published in Bee Culture Magazine and also published a book through the A.I. Root Company.  She just recently graduated with an MFA degree in creative writing through Queens University of Charlotte.

Marley McKenna  is an adjunct professor and writer in Bozeman, MT whose work deals with place, nature, family and identity formation.  Her poetry and prose often interweave familial non-fiction with a sensory experience of the world, which strays into fiction.  She is concerned more with writing what is honest on the page than adhering strictly to rules of genre, and her pose, poetry and essays are very much a part of each other.  She has published creative and nonfiction work in New West, 40 Below, and Cutbank and is currently working on her first novel.

Of language|s| the rain speaks – Felino A. Soriano

Of language|s| the rain speaks is a documentation of observed content, specific to the manifestation of interpreted devices composed in the direct/indirect ambulation of reactive notions to sensorial involvement.  Through physical and allegorical windows (too, of corporeal inferring sans resource of ocular understanding) observation is the emotional involvement to adaptation of specialized communication with rain and the multiple bodies its spectrum of spatial engagement inhabits.
